Workshops

Aspirin synthesis

Workshop description

Topic: Pharmaceutical chemistry

In the workshop, you will familiarize with pharmaceutical chemistry and make aspirin.

Did you know that ancient Egyptians used willow bark as a pain reliever? Willow bark contains natural salicylates and has been used as an anti-inflammatory. Acetylsalicylic acid (trade name aspirin) is a synthetic derivative of natural salicylates. It is commonly used as a painkiller, because it causes less harm in the body compared to salicylates.

Acetylsalicylic acid (trade name aspirin) is a commonly used anti-inflammatory drug that is known as a blood thinner. You will be introduced into pharmaceutical chemistry in the workshop. The laboratory research part contains ester synthesis between salicylic acid and acetic anhydride. The chemical composition of the final product is checked using the FTIR spectrum.
