Workshops

Aspirin synthesis

Workshop description

Topic: Farmaceutical chemistry

In the workshop, you will familiarize with medical chemistry and make aspirin.

Acetylsalicylic acid (trade name aspirin) is a commonly used anti-inflammatory drug that is known as a blood thinner. In the workshop, medical chemistry is introduced and aspirin is made by ester synthesis between salicylic acid and acetic anhydride. The chemical composition of the final product is checked using the FTIR spectrum.

Did you know that ancient Egypt used willow bark as a pain reliever? Willow bark contains natural salicylates and has long been used as an anti-inflammatory. Acetylsalicylic acid, or aspirin, is a synthetic derivative of natural salicylates, which has started to be used because it causes less harm in the body.
