Make an energy harvesting piezoelectric keychain

Työpajankuvaus

Aihe: sähkötekstiilit + energian kerääminen

In this session we will go through the very basics of an ambient energy harvesting circuit and construct our own simple toy keychain that lights up with piezoelectricity.

Piezoelectric keychain

Piezoelectric materials produce electric charge when mechanical stress is applied and vice versa. We will work with a piezoelectric ceramic speaker to make an energy harvesting circuit. Short tapping movements on the piezoelectric element will make the LED blink is short bursts. This is the same principle used in floor tiles that harvest walking energy or kids’ shoes that light up when walking!

Welcome to the workshop to explore piezoelectric energy harvesting in a hands-on way and learn more about how ambient energy in your everyday can be harnessed.

We will start by understanding the components and circuit used in the toy. We will also go through the basics of using textile-based conductive materials for constructing circuits. The participants can then design and make their own small toy with some help from the workshop organisers. All materials and tools will be provided at the workshop. The participants can take home their creations after the workshop.
