Johanna Forsman, Murata Electronics

Senior Process Development Manager

"There is no such thing as an unsolvable problem. Solutions always exist; the challenge is evaluating whether pursuing them makes scientific or economic sense."

What have you studied and what influenced this choice back in the day?

I have a Master’s degree and a PhD from Aalto, majoring in materials physics. I’ve always been interested in the fundamental physical principles and phenomena in the world. Studying physics was in a way postponing specialization a bit further.

How did you end up being a professor?

After my PhD, I wanted to see what working in industry R&D is like. Murata was expanding at the time, and I considered it an interesting high-tech company. My working style fit very well with Murata’s culture, and I have since stayed and been promoted.

What is the best thing about your job?

I enjoy most when my team members succeed in their projects and develop to new professional levels. Second comes the variety of challenges to solve! From another perspective, I very much enjoy proudly explaining what kind of products we develop and manufacture here at the Murata factory in Finland.

What have been the highlights and key lessons of your career?

There is no such thing as an unsolvable problem. Solutions always exist; the challenge is evaluating whether pursuing them makes scientific or economic sense. When obstacles are cleared, it’s great to see something you’ve been involved in actually implemented and utilized.

What do you expect from the future?

I aim to further develop my leadership skills. Technical developments (AI, quantum computing, etc.), the global economy, and political changes guarantee new challenges to solve and new skills to work on.

For whom this is a suitable career option?

A solid technical background and innovative mind are the backbones in any research and development (R&D) position. In most fields, and especially in R&D of MEMS-based (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) components, communication and facilitation skills are mandatory, as projects require experts from multiple fields. Being able to alternate between focusing on individual tasks and communicating with others is key to success.
