Selfie Math

Workshop description

This interactive workshop aims at revealing and playing with the mathematics that underlies the functioning of the cameras on our personal smartphones.

Introduction: Digital images are ubiquitous in our daily lives, but have you ever wondered about the process involved in capturing a photo with your smartphone? The answer lies in a series of algorithms that utilize creative mathematical concepts to enhance the image quality. This workshop is designed to familiarize participants with these algorithms and mathematical concepts involved, and enable them to gain practical experience by experimenting with them directly on their own smartphone.

Workshop Activities:

  1. Introduction to color perception and representation of digital color images.
  2. Image processing algorithms inside our smartphones: what do they do? What’s the maths behind them? In this workshop a brief introduction to demosaicing, denoising, tone-mapping of HDR images, and white balance will be provided.
  3. Hands-On Experience: participants will become aware and play with HDR photography and white balance algorithms present in their own smartphones.
  4. Role Models: There will be a Q&A session with successful women in VR and IT fields discussing their career paths and achievements, and sharing their experience with participants.
