Tomorrow’s home is a non-toxic carbon store
The demo is organised by the Wood Material Science and Wood Material Technology research groups from the School of Chemical Engineering
Wood is an excellent building material: it grows naturally, is lightweight to transport, and stores carbon for up to hundreds of years.
However, wood construction often involves chemicals such as adhesives and coatings that make materials difficult to recycle and can be harmful to people and the environment.
At Aalto University, environmentally friendly alternatives are being developed together with companies, also utilizing sawdust, recycled fiber, and paperboard. The goal is to keep the carbon in products and to make the solutions cost-competitive as well.
The demo session will feature:
- Short demos of recyclable wood-based materials
- Examples of how research progresses into products
- An opportunity to ask a researcher about career paths
Presenter: Sol Villanustre
Research groups: Professor Lauri Rautkari and Mark Hughes’s research groups (Wood Material Science and Wood Material Technology)
Department: Bioproducts and Biosystems
