Girls building satellite

Shaking up Tech is aimed at high school students who are women or belong to gender minorities and who are interested in mathematics, problem-solving, and the diverse study and career opportunities offered by the field of technology.

The application period for the event is annually in October. You can apply already as a first-year high school student. The most important thing in selecting participants is interest in the field of technology. However, you don't need to know yet exactly what you want to study in the future.

The field of technology offers a versatile and international study environment as well as broad and well-paid career opportunities. Shaking up Tech suits you just as well if you are only just getting to know the possibilities of the field of technology, as if you already have a clear dream of a future profession!

How to apply:

1. Check out the program and apply

Before applying, take a look at what kind of program each university has in store. Shaking up Tech is organized at several university campuses at the same time in different parts of Finland, and the program offerings of the campuses vary partly. So please familiarize yourself with the events more closely on the campuses' own program pages.

Fill in the application form carefully, especially your email address. Most of the messages and instructions are sent by email. If you are interested in the event at more than one university, you can rank them in order of preference on the application form.

Briefly tell in your application why you would like to participate in the event.

2. Wait for the selection results

We’ll notify you of the selection results by email after the application period ends. Please remember to check your spam folder as well.

3. Accept your offered spot by the deadline

Fill in the participation acceptance form by the deadline so that your place at the event is confirmed. Read the travel instructions, book any travel tickets, and make your own travel plan to the event location.

Remember to tell us about any special needs, for example mobility limitations, dietary requirements, and other matters that the event organizers should know about.

4. Read the participation instructions

We will send participation instructions by email to all participants who have accepted their spot. Familiarize yourself with them well in advance of the event.

Free event

Shaking up Tech is a completely free event for participants.

There is no participation fee, and the aim of the event is to offer participants as equal opportunities as possible to explore the field of technology, regardless of place of residence or financial situation.

We reimburse participants' travel costs to and from the event. If necessary, we also arrange accommodation for participants arriving from far away. Read more below and familiarize yourself with each university's travel reimbursement instructions in more detail on the campuses' own programme pages if you are traveling to the event from far away!

Traveling and accommodation

Shaking up Tech reimburses the travel costs incurred from traveling to the event for participants. On behalf of the participant, we apply for a tax-free grant to cover any travel costs in Finland (vero.fi/grants).

Participants are responsible for booking and purchasing travel tickets themselves. Keep all tickets and receipts, as travel costs are reimbursed after the event. If you are unsure about the amount of reimbursable travel expenses, please contact the event's production team.

We reimburse the use of a car in accordance with the official state mileage allowance only for those parts of the journey that cannot be made by public transport.

If traveling to the event location on the same day would be unreasonably long or difficult, the participant will be arranged free accommodation for the night before and/or after the event. Notice that Shaking up Tech will make the possible accommodation booking on the participant’s behalf.

More detailed travel and accommodation instructions can be found on the campus-specific event pages.

A safer event for everyone

At Shaking up Tech, every participant must be able to feel welcome, safe, and valued as themselves.

At the event, all participants are respected, others are listened to openly, and we together take care of a supportive atmosphere. Avoid assumptions about others' backgrounds, experiences, or identity. Mistakes are allowed, but the most important thing is the willingness to learn and take responsibility.

The event team is present throughout the day to help participants and answer questions. If you encounter or notice inappropriate behavior, intervene in the situation or tell the event team about.

You can always turn to the event team if you need help or support in any situation. You will recognize them by their Shaking up Tech shirts.
