"The future is wonderful precisely because you don't know it."
What have you studied and what influenced this choice back in the day?
I studied for a Master of Science in Technology at LUT University and completed my doctorate at the Helsinki University of Technology (now part of Aalto University). I’ve always been interested in how technology can help people and the planet, which naturally drew me to engineering.
How did you end up in your current position?
I’ve always been energised by new things and the chance to learn. I began as a doctoral researcher at the Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University). After that, I moved to Optiplan (now part of Sweco) as Head of Development, and later returned to research at VTT, the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. There I held a variety of roles and most recently served as Research Professor for the Built Environment.
After VTT, I was CEO of RIL (the Finnish Association of Civil Engineers) and then Director of Development at SRV (SRV Group Plc). I now work at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences as Director of RDI (research, development and innovation), overseeing all research, development and innovation activities.
What is the best thing about your job?
The most rewarding aspect is its sense of purpose. I also value the international dimension, which brings completely different perspectives. And the whole work community is fantastic. It gives a great deal back.
What have been the highlights and key lessons of your career?
I’ve had many wonderful moments and highlights. I’ve been pleased to receive personal recognition, but what’s been especially gratifying is succeeding together with the team.
By nature I’m fast-paced and like to drive things forward quickly. Along the way, though, I’ve learned patience. I’ve also learned a great deal from people who disagree with me, and I’m particularly grateful for that.
What are your plans and goals in the future?
Right now, I’m in my dream job—though to be fair, I’ve felt that way in every role at the time. The future is wonderful precisely because it’s unknown. I’m looking forward to it.
What kind of person is suitable for your profession?
This is a brilliant career for someone who wants to drive change and do good. An engineering education provides an excellent foundation and opens doors to many kinds of roles.
In leadership, it’s especially important to see the big picture, to have the courage to make decisions—including the tough ones—and above all to listen to and encourage the whole team.
Your greetings for young people in high school deliberating their future career?
An engineering education enables many different paths; it’s a strong springboard into a wide range of roles. In this profession you can specialise in very diverse areas. It’s also worth seizing opportunities—both during your studies and at work—because it always pays off.
