Glow Lab
Workshop description
Topic: Organic Chemistry and Fluorescence
In this workshop you synthesize a fluorescent dye and learn about fluorescence.
Fluorescent dyes are widely used in everyday situations, creative arts and in research settings. Not only do they deliver awe-striking visual effects, but they can also help us understand biological materials and processes, catch criminals and even spot leaks in plumbing systems - by making the invisible glow. Many natural compounds are fluorescent, like quinine in tonic water or chlorophyll in plants, however a wide variety of fluorescent dyes are available to us through organic synthesis. In this workshop you will synthesize fluorescein, a fluorescent organic dye, that is an important diagnostic tool in medicine. After the synthesis, you will observe the fluorescence of your product under a UV lamp.
