Understanding the structure of a material is essential in metallurgical research.

Steel is the most used material in the world and different types of steel are used in countless applications. To decrease the environmental load during steel production, production processes must be developed and improved. This also includes utilization of by-products like slag according the circular economy. To be able to utilize the lags their properties must be according to required application(s) eg. earthworks, concrete production, soil betterment. These properties depend on material structure which can be researched eg. by using microscope. When researching slags formed with different treatments it is possible to make polished sections for microscope for structural analysis.

In the workshop you can familiarize yourself with preparation of polished samples and researching them with optical microscope. The workshop has following topics:

  1. Familiarization to the subject
  2. Preparation of polished sections on laboratory
  3. Use of optical microscope to observe the samples

Organiser: Process Metallurgy Research Unit, Faculty of Technology, University of Oulu
Language: Finnish
Time: 12:30-13:30 (1st group) and 14:00-15:00 (2nd group)

The maximum amount of participants is 5 people/group.
