Workshop description
Subject: Knowledge of material structure
In this workshop, you will learn how to prepare fine samples for microscopy methods used in structural research and examine slag samples under an optical microscope.
Understanding the structure of a material is essential in metallurgical research.
Steel is one of the most widely used materials in the world and there are countless applications for different types of steel. Reducing the environmental burden of steel production requires innovation and development of manufacturing processes. This also applies to the commercialisation of process by-products such as slags in line with circular economy thinking. In order to be used, slags must meet the requirements of the applications (earthworks, cement raw material, soil improvers, etc.). These properties depend on the structure of the material, which can be studied, for example, by microscopy. In slag research, slag samples that have been treated and cooled in various ways can be used to produce fine samples that can be examined under different microscopes to determine the structure of the samples.
The workshop will introduce the preparation and examination of sands using an optical microscope. The workshop consists of the following steps:
