Laser and photonics - the technology of light

Workshop description

Topic: photonics
Language: bilingual (Finnish/English)

Come and find out about photonics and see how light and lasers are used in modern technology. You’ll get to try out for yourself all the things you can do with light!

Photonics

Light is all around us – but did you know that it can also be controlled and manipulated in many different ways?

Photonics is a rapidly developing field of science and technology in which light is utilised in a variety of ways to meet the needs of science, technology and society. Applications of photonics can be found, for example, in telecommunications, medicine, industry, and radar and measurement technologies.

In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of photonics through hands-on experiments and demos. Participants will be introduced to the most common optical components and will have the chance to experiment with how laser beams can be guided, shaped and focused using lenses and mirrors. We will also examine how the human eye works and how it forms an image of the surrounding world.

During the workshop, participants will see first-hand how the properties of light can be utilised in various technological applications. At the same time, they will gain an insight into how photonics is involved in many technologies familiar to us and what new possibilities the control of light offers for the future.
